Lares to Machu Picchu: 4-Day Trek Itinerary

Embark on an unforgettable adventure that combines stunning Andean landscapes, vibrant local culture, and the iconic Machu Picchu. The Lares Trek is an alternative route that offers breathtaking mountain views, remote villages, and serene lagoons.
Day 1: Cusco - Calca - Huaran - Canchacancha
We will pick you up early in the morning to begin our trek along a scenic trail leading to the community of Canchacancha. After approximately three hours of hiking, we will stop at a strategic point to enjoy a replenishing lunch. Once we’ve eaten, we will continue for two more hours until we reach the Canchacancha community.
Here, we will set up our camp around 5:00 p.m. Later in the evening, we’ll enjoy a delicious dinner at approximately 7:00 p.m. You will have the opportunity to marvel at a clear night sky full of stars.
Day 2: Canchacancha - Pachacutec Pass - Coyalayo Lake - Quiswarani
The second day begins with a hike to the Abra Pachacutec mountain pass, located over 4,400 meters (14,436 feet) above sea level. From this vantage point, you’ll take in breathtaking views of the valley’s lagoons.
Afterward, we’ll enjoy a delicious lunch to restore our energy. The trek will then descend towards Quiswarani, a community known for its textile traditions. From here, we’ll ascend toward the beautiful Queuñaqocha Lagoon, where we will set up camp for the night.
Day 3: Quiswarani - Lares Hot Springs - Aguas Calientes
We will start the day with a hearty breakfast before heading through Andean villages toward the Willkiccasa Pass at an altitude of 4,100 meters (13,451 feet). From this pass, you’ll enjoy stunning views of the Colquecruz and Pitusiray mountains.
The trek will then lead us to the Cuncani community. From there, we will travel to Lares, the district capital, whose main attraction is its soothing thermal baths. You’ll have the chance to relax in these rejuvenating waters before we continue our journey.
In the afternoon, we will take a bus to Ollantaytambo, where we’ll board a train to Aguas Calientes. Overnight accommodation will be arranged in a comfortable lodge in Aguas Calientes.
Day 4: Machu Picchu - Cusco
We will rise early to enjoy breakfast before embarking on a winding hike that leads to the mystical citadel of Machu Picchu. A knowledgeable guide will accompany you, providing insights into the history and significance of this ancient site. After the guided tour, you will have free time to explore the area at your own pace.
Once the visit is complete, you’ll return to Aguas Calientes on your own to board the train back to Cusco at the designated time.
